The bill of lading (administrative translation of Bill of Lading, also called B/L) is the title which is given by the maritime carrier to the shipper (or his representative) in definition and recognition of the loading list that his ship will transport.
The maritime bill of lading or Bill of Lading (B/L), is the maritime transport contract for the goods. Issued by the carrier to the sender, it details the mode as well as the journey of a shipment from its origin to its final destination.
The B/L constitutes title to the goods and can therefore be negotiable, description:
- The B/L is a negotiable transport document.
- Records the handling of the cargo by the carrier.
- Describes the goods shipped.
- Materializes the maritime transport contract.

The B/L which is the definition of the loading list. The original document can be a document of ownership of the goods and can be negotiable.
The contract between the Forwader and the carrier is a document which determines the responsibilities of the parties.
